I've Been Hearing Voices

You know, even though I sound as though I'm wearing a clothespin on my nose, I quite enjoyed reading aloud and listening to everybody else's reading of their poems yesterday. I think The Watercats is on to something. I noticed as well that Debra Schubert did a vlog over at Write On Target to showcase her new song, and both John Hayes and Poetikat regularly add audio and, in John's case, video performances to their blogs. Maybe after a while it will just be the expected thing to do, to read our poems and stories aloud as a natural outgrowth of the blogging experience. If that's to happen, though, I really must work on my voice. I would like to sound like OrsonWelles - or James Earl Jones. Yeah. That's it. Like the way James Earl Jones would sound if he were a sixty-something Canadian white lady.

So the whole Jumping Back into Blogging and Writing Poems thing is going well. I'm having fun.

Meanwhile, Angel May has up and left on a hugely ambitious RV trip, and I wish I could tag along. She was asking about places to stay along the way, so I went hunting through The Turtle's archives, and the first relevant thing I found was this post about Bakersfield, CA from March 10, 2009. When I read the post, I discovered that it marked the day when I wrote: " I hereby declare my intention to participate in NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month event this coming November." I remember. I was very apprehensive, but also very excited, way back then, about NaNoWriMo. It's a wonder I didn't explode by November.

And meanwhile, I have one day left to work (half a day, actually) before I head over to Vancouver, and a day after that before I fly to England. I had a note from Robin saying that somebody is going to be performing the Mozart Requiem at Buckfast Abbey on the 15th of this month, asking whether that would interest me. Well, duh. We've been to the abbey, but not for a concert. It's a beautiful place, not far from our holiday home, and I look forward to hearing the Requiem performed there.

Off I go now, to do some packing. Two more sleeps.

I don't even own a microphone, but I guess I'll have to get on board if I want to keep riding the bus! I do hate to hear my recorded voice, though. I sound like a crow!

Enjoy the Requiem! What a beautiful setting for it.

Karen is lucky--sounding like a crow would be a definite improvement for me!

Sandra, couldn't help picturing James Earl Jones' head on you body. Thanks for my first real laugh of the day.

Enjoy the concert!

Thanks, Karen and Maribeth. (Looking like James Earl Jones wouldn't be so bad - it's certainly worked for him!)

It's been my observation that most people hear their own voices differently than others do--I believe part of singing or reading poetry or probably acting (tho I've never done that) has to do with getting comfortable with the sound of one's own voice in one's own ear & realizing it probably resonates differently to others. It's similar in an odd way to playing guitar--guitars almost always sound somewhat different to the player than the listener.
