Day 11 -When Murphy's Law Came into Effect

Remember the strange odor in my house, that turned out to be coming from the water heater, which is in a closet off my bedroom? The problem that the plumber will be here tomorrow afternoon to fix?  Welllllll, I slept in the living room last night, so as not to have to smell the strange smell in my nose all night. This morning, we turned the water heater on long enough to heat water for our showers, then turned it off. Then we left home.

We spent the day in Victoria, came home to find the back of the house flooded because the water heater had exploded (or imploded, or just fallen to pieces. God knows.). We have mopped up what we could with towels, and I've spun the towels dry in the washing machine, but I can't dry them, because the dryer and the water heater are on the same circuit. Oh, and it rained here all day, from the looks of things. (It did not rain in Victoria. That's a bright spot in the story.)  There are heaters running, all over the house. It feels like the middle of the night, but it's really just after 7 p.m., so I suppose I may as well try to write. It's not as if I can go have a nice hot bubble bath.

                                    Big sigh.

p.s. It is 11:44 p.m. - I did write, though it was a struggle. One of my characters had a nice, hot, steamy, lavender-scented bubble bath. Today's word count: 2,116. I also added a little information about Albany to a previous day's work, so my total to date is 24,131.

Thank you! I've been writing a little and googling the New York State Archives a lot, and I seem to have worn my poor little laptop out. I just had to shut everything down and start over, because my system was hunkered down with its widdle fists clenched, refusing to budge. If this keeps up, I'm going to stand my laptop in the corner and leave it there until it agrees to behave. What if I'm under attack by Luddite demons?

Keep it up! Your word total inspires me. I'm only at 17,630, just a bit behind. :)

I hate days like that. What a pain and a mess.

Has the plumber finally come?

Emilie, you're doing fine. I've just been trying to stay ahead, to allow for slumps. I know me too well.

Barry, no. The plumber isn't due until this afternoon. I am so glad that we buy filtered drinking water. That means that we have 4 gallons or so of water for coffee, etc. We're bringing wash water in by the bucketful and heating it on the stove as needed. (The garden hose is still functioning.)

Frankly, I'm glad I'm NOT participating in NaNoWriMo. It has taken 3 weeks, a complete trashing, a pulling out of the trash, and total re-write to get my latest short story in shape. I'm talking approximately 2500 words here. This may not be rocket science, but it certainly is a lot like work.

LOL! What you have to realize is that the words you submit to NaNoWriMo don't have to be good. They just have to add up to 50,000. The trashing starts Dec. 3, I believe.

Hot water heaters--great when they're working, an incredible pain when they break down. Good for you that you wrote nonetheless!

I had to write, John. It took my mind off the damp. ;>)
